Wast Water, Lake District

The Wasdale Redheads

My last destination during a four-day visit to the Lake District was Wast Water. I arrived mid-afternoon hoping to photograph the view from a nearby fell but the weather was dull and showed no signs of changing. I decided to stay at ground level and take pictures from the lake side instead. As sunset approached the sky remained grey and it started raining; I was sure this was the end of the light for the day but I decided to hang around, make a cup of tea and enjoy the peace and quiet. Little did I know that a few minutes later a red glow would emerge on the horizon and expand until it filled the whole sky with colour. For 10 minutes I experienced one of the best sunsets I've seen. It was a wonderful experience.
